Focused on supporting youth, or rangatahi, we collaborate with digital tools such as Quest, Headstrong, The Brief, TuneIn, and SPARX, meticulously designed to enhance mental health. As well as providing access to these and many other apps, Tirohia provides the ability for researchers to easily integrate their their custom applications to evaluate their effectiveness toward the goal of improving rangatahi wellbeing.

Headstrong

Developed by University of Auckland clinicians and researchers, Headstrong offers evidence-based strategies to enhance mood and resilience through a chatbot platform, providing a conversational learning experience.

With courses in Foundations, Stress Detox, and Kia Haumanu, which draws from Te Ao Māori principles, Headstrong helps users develop self-awareness, coping skills, and healthy behaviors. Encouraging long-term engagement, the app's predefined rules ensure safety and reliability, making it a valuable tool with potential positive impacts on mental health when supported by clinicians and caregivers.

The Brief

The Brief is a program designed to address alcohol and other drug (AOD) use and its impact on health. It utilizes the Substances and Choices Scale (SACS) questionnaire to evaluate the level of risk an individual might have for alcohol or drug-related issues. This two-part questionnaire assesses recent substance use and potential associated harms, resulting in a 'SACS difficulties score.'

The feedback provided through The Brief helps young individuals contemplate their substance use, offering insights and recommendations for change. By raising awareness about the risks involved, The Brief empowers individuals to make more informed decisions about their choices regarding alcohol and drugs.

Quest

Quest - Te Whitianga offers a range of modules aimed at enhancing wellbeing and maintaining social connections.

It includes activities such as a guided game to find guardians, methods to focus on positivity, techniques for relaxation and mindfulness, creative exercises for mood improvement, support for spiritual well-being, tools for managing thoughts and emotions, problem-solving strategies, and communication skills for dealing with challenges.

Tune In

Tune In offers valuable support by aiding in goal achievement and emotional management. Users can connect with chosen supporters for assistance during challenging times. The platform empowers individuals to select areas for personal growth, craft plans, and identify strategies to attain their desired objectives.

Daily reminders encourage consistent progress tracking and plan execution, with the flexibility to adapt goals or strategies as circumstances evolve. Additionally, users are rewarded with curated playlists created by inspirational figures upon engaging with the app.

SPARX

SPARX is an evidence-based interactive game designed to assist young individuals experiencing low mood.

It offers modules that teach coping techniques for negative emotions, including relaxation, engaging in enjoyable activities, problem-solving, effective communication, identifying and countering negative thoughts, and replacing them with more positive ones.

My Mood

Stripped to its core, it focuses solely on mood tracking, creating an unbiased baseline for comparing other apps. MMCA ensures standardized assessments, diminishes bias, and captures event data, unraveling the connection between daily events and emotions. Life Buoy

LifeBuoy is an app that aims to help young people develop strategies and problem-solving skills to manage their suicidal thoughts. The app has been designed by experts in mental health and suicide prevention at the Black Dog Institute, Australia.

There are seven modules to move through, each taking approximately 3-7 minutes to complete. Once a module is complete, it will unlock and ‘light up’ a new module to move to.
