Tirohia offers support for your health and wellbeing and provides tools and advice for the parents of young children.

The services and information that Tirohia provides includes the content, apps, and tools on our website (which everyone can view), and our web portal that provides personalised information just for you and hosts our research evaluation studies.

Tirohia does not provide counselling services. The content and information provided on the Tirohia website and web portal is not intended as professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Click here for ideas of where to get help.

1. Introduction and acceptance of Terms of Use

These Terms of Use, with our Privacy Policy, set out how we will work with you. Read them carefully. They’ll tell you your rights and responsibilities when you access and use our website, web portal and associated tools, and what you can expect from us. Accepting the Terms of Use means that you are agree with them, and you agree to follow them. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use this website or complete registration on the web portal.

‘associated tools’ mean any of the e-screening assessments, apps, chatbots, and any other digital tools developed by us and available to use on our web portal, including but not limited to:

Headstrong (iOS and Android application);
Tune In (iOS and Android application);
Play Kindly (iOS and Android application);
Super Kids (web application);
Kākano (web application);
My Mood App (iOS and Android application);


‘research study’ means a research study that makes use of the web portal and/or associated tools;
‘we’, ‘our’, and ‘us’ means the HABITs Research Group, based at the University of Auckland;
‘personal information’ has the meaning given in the Privacy Act 1993 (or replacement legislation) but generally means information about an identifiable individual; and 'including’ means including without limitation.

3. We can make changes to these Terms of Use

We may change these Terms of Use at any time, with or without notice to you. You agree to the Terms of Use that are on the website, web portal or associated tools at each time you access them. These Terms of Use were last updated on 30 August, 2023.

4. It is important to understand that Tirohia won’t give you a diagnosis

The Tirohia website, web portal and any associated tools, are designed to support good health and wellbeing. If you are not finding the tools helpful, don’t forget there are other places to seek support, including talking to whānau / family, a qualified health professional like your GP or school nurse, or a school counsellor.

The content on this website and web portal is for information only. The screening tests are not designed to provide a diagnosis. They are designed only to provide information about the symptoms of depression, anxiety and other common health & wellbeing problems, and to assist in evaluating parenting practices and outcomes.

5. Tirohia is not a clinical service

Tirohia provides a platform for access to research studies. Unless otherwise stated, the research studies are managed and made available by third parties, not Tirohia. If you use Tirohia to register for and participate in a research study, you will be provided with further information, including a consent form, specific to each research study (‘study information’). The study information governs your participation in that study. Our privacy policy sets out further information about participating in a research study.You may be referred to a doctor or other health professional as a result of a research study that you participate in. Your doctor or other health professional is responsible for your health care, not Tirohia.

6. You are responsible for the way you use Tirohia

You agree that your use of the website, web portal or tools is at your own risk.We provide the assessments, materials, content and activities ‘as is’, and for general information only. We have done our best to make sure it is accurate and looks good. We provide information in good faith to help our users. However, we don’t guarantee that we won’t ever make a mistake.

We do not accept any legal obligation for:

the way you use the website, web portal or associated tools
your being unable to use the website, web portal or associated tools
any inaccuracy or error within the website, web portal or associated tools
the website, web portal or associated tools failing to meet your needs or any other purpose
any loss or damage that may be directly or indirectly caused by any information on the website, web portal or associated tools or any information left out of the website, web portal or associated tools.

If, despite the above, we are found to have any liability to you, that liability is limited to a maximum of a total of $100.

The University of Auckland (and its licensors) own all rights including intellectual property rights in the website, web portal and associated tools, including the content, unless otherwise specified. You may use them only for your personal research, education and/or evaluation purposes.

We reserve all rights except as expressly set out in these Terms of Use. You must not use this website, web portal or associated tools or their content outside of New Zealand.

Nothing in these Terms of Use entitles you to use the name, trademarks or logos of the University of Auckland or its staff.

Access to the web portal and tools may be for a restricted amount of time, depending on the research study that you agree to participate in. We reserve the right to stop or change the service we provide on the website or web portal without giving notice. We do not have to keep the website and web portal available at all times.

As a participant or user of the Tirohia website, web portal or associated tools, you must not, and must not permit any other person to:

use them for any purpose other than the purposes of the research study or for personal use;
copy, modify, translate, adapt, or create derivative works from any part of them including any software component or any content displayed in connection with them;
attempt to derive the source code of any associated tool, except to the extent permitted by law;
assign, sub-license, distribute or commercially exploit any of them;
access them via any method other than standard web browsers, and not use scraping, deep-linking, harvesting, data mining, robots, spiders, automation or any similar data extraction or monitoring process in using them;
or introduce viruses or do anything else designed to interfere with their operation.

11. Your privacy

Your personal information is very important. We will use your information only as described in the Tirohia Privacy Policy. You have the right to request confirmation of, access to and correction of personal information that we hold about you. See our Privacy Policy for more information.

We will take reasonable steps to ensure the security and confidentiality of information that you provide to us on the website, web portal, or through using any of the associated tools.

The Tirohia team aim to provide high availability of our website, web portal and associated tools, but availability cannot be guaranteed. We are not responsible for any loss of data due to network or system outages, file corruption, accidental deletion, incompatibilities or any other reasons.

12. Fees and charges and cancellation

There is no fee or charge for you to register with Tirohia. However, if you access the website, web portal or download any of the associated tools through the use of a mobile phone or the Internet, your normal phone or internet charges will apply.If you register and use Tirohia web portal, you can choose to stop using it at any time.

Where the website or web portal contains links to other sites and resources provided by third parties, we have no control over the content. These links are provided for your information only. We accept no responsibility for them or for any loss or damage that may arise from your use of them.

14. We take misuse of Tirohia seriously

If you deliberately use the website, web portal or associated tools in a way which causes harm to the University or any other person entitled to use them, you may be asked to indemnify the University or that person for that harm that you have caused.

These Terms of Use are governed by New Zealand law. If any term cannot be enforced under New Zealand law, it is to be read as if modified to the extent needed to become enforceable. No waiver of any term by us is effective unless in writing and signed by us.
